Over the last few weeks we've been talking about how forgiveness has powerful impact on your well-being and mental health. It also improves physical health because it signifies true mind-body connection.
Forgiveness is work of the body, mind, and emotions, which has also a relational aspect.
First, it’s important to recognize what forgiveness isn’t. It’s not the same thing as reconciliation or condoning bad behavior. It’s letting go of the thought that our past could’ve been different. It’s letting go of the feeling that it shouldn’t have happened.
Unforgiveness leads to resentment. To harbor resentment is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies. Forgiveness helps with recovery from depression, anxiety, eating disorder, self harm, alcoholism, substance abuse and other issues. Even just in learning to live life, forgiveness plays a key role.
You forgive not for the good of the offender, but you do it for you. It’s a gift you give to yourself.
